Business Receives National Recognition For Employing People With Disabilities

Black Hills Corporation has been a tremendous partner of Black Hills Works.

They were recently recognized by SourceAmerica for their partnership with BHW, a relationship that began almost seven years ago when we began managing the corporation’s security monitoring.

The work was originally performed by a company out of Nebraska, but it was not meeting standards. At about the same time, Ellsworth Air Force Base no longer needed Black Hills Works employees to continue operating the switchboard. “We always want to have an array of jobs and the switchboard was great for people with limited mobility,” President and CEO Brad Saathoff said.

Black Hills Works approached Black Hills Corporation about the security monitoring because it was similar to the type of work at Ellsworth. “They decided to move the work to Rapid City and set up a place to do the work. We were able to replace what we had lost with similar jobs,” Saathoff noted.

The move was a leap of faith.

“When somebody like Black Hills Corp. ‘gets’ what we do, recognizes the importance of diversity, and says that they can bring that into the fabric of their organization, they are serving as a role model.” –Brad Saathoff

Kelly Reed, director of IT Compliance and Security at Black Hills Corporation, said the partnership has benefited their company in more ways than one. Black Hills Works not only provides quality employees, but also manages the staffing, Reed said, which is efficient and works great. “I appreciate that,” she said. “They’re very reliable.”

The employees Reed works with regularly are invested in their work—so much so that she encourages local businesses to consider hiring people with disabilities. “I love their passion.”
